How to Add AI Data Questions to Your Existing Power BI

Keep your existing reports and semantic models, then evaluate a new access and question workflow without assuming permissions will configure themselves.

You do not always need to rebuild your reporting to give more people a way to use it. When your business already has Power BI reports and semantic models, the useful starting point is to identify what should stay in place and what access or question workflow you want to add.

Timeliq supports connecting a customer’s existing Power BI reports and semantic models. Use it to add report access and business-data questions around the reporting you already maintain.

Identify the report and the model separately

The report is the view people interact with. The semantic model provides the data structure and business definitions used for analysis. Microsoft describes Power BI semantic models as a reporting and visualization data source in its semantic-model documentation.

For an initial evaluation, choose one report and its relevant model. Identify the owner, key measures, expected refresh process and intended audience. Do not begin by connecting every model in an organization before you have a repeatable test.

A model may be suitable for its current report but still need clearer definitions for open-ended questions. A field named “Actual” or several similar revenue measures may make sense to the report author while remaining ambiguous to a new user.

Write a small question set around existing measures

Choose questions that use measures the business already trusts. For example: monthly net revenue, margin by division or overdue amounts by customer group. Specify the period, currency and filter scope.

Use a reference report or calculation to record the expected result. Include one question that the model cannot answer. An unsupported question should lead to a clarification or limitation, not a fabricated measure.

Avoid treating a readable answer as proof that it used the intended business definition. Compare the number and context with the reference result.

Establish the connection and authorization requirements

Before setup, identify who can approve the connection and which identities will query data or view reports. Check whether the external environment needs administrator approval and which permissions the chosen integration requires.

Microsoft’s sharing documentation explains that access and licensing depend on the sharing arrangement. Review the actual external connection before claiming that every recipient needs—or does not need—a particular license.

Do not assume that signing in to Timeliq automatically grants access to an organization’s entire Power BI environment. Likewise, do not assume that every external security rule is inherited across every embedding or question path. Verify the intended identity and permissions for each path.

Separate report discovery from data questions

Putting an authorized existing report in a portal helps users find it. Connecting a semantic model for questions is another capability. One successful report view does not prove that the question integration is correctly configured, and a successful question does not prove that report access is correct.

Test both explicitly. Use one authorized identity and another that should have less access. Confirm the model and report selections, the returned data and the failure behavior for unauthorized requests.

Keep the first evaluation read-focused. Do not assume the connection grants the ability to rewrite the customer’s measures or modify all their existing reports. Any change to the source model belongs in the customer’s normal change process.

Add messaging after the web workflow is checked

Once the intended users and model work correctly in the web experience, evaluate WhatsApp or Slack. Check the channel identity, destination and audience. A shared channel may not be an appropriate place to return a detailed customer or financial breakdown.

Repeat the same reference questions and compare results. Include a follow-up that keeps the original filters and a request outside the user’s permission scope. Record the outcome rather than assuming the two interfaces behave identically.

Keep the investment and improve the access

The goal is not to move every report or replace a model that already works. It is to make existing reporting easier to discover and business questions easier to reach, while preserving responsibility for definitions and access.
